Stanford's Geographical Establishment was among the most respected map publishers and sellers of the Victorian and Edwardian era, supplying explorers, military officers, travelers, and institutions throughout the British Empire. Through such arrangements, Stanford introduced high-quality continental cartography to an English-speaking audience while preserving the accuracy and authority of the original surveys. The map covers a substantial region extending from Le Mans in the northwest through Tours and the Loire Valley to Chartres, Châteaudun, Vendôme, and Romorantin. Issued at a scale of 1:200,000, it presents an exceptionally detailed network of roads, railways, rivers, forests, administrative divisions, and settlements. The rapidly expanding railway system, emphasized in red, reflects the technological optimism and economic development of France during the Belle Époque. Its design follows the distinguished traditions of French military and administrative cartography. Prefectures, sub-prefectures, cantons, waterways, and communication routes are carefully identified, demonstrating the map's practical use for travelers, officials, and military planners alike. The clarity and precision of French topographical mapping during this period established an international standard that influenced mapmaking across Europe. The region depicted includes some of France's most historic landscapes. The Loire Valley, famed for its châteaux and fertile countryside, occupies the southern portion of the sheet, while Le Mans and Chartres represent ancient centers of commerce, pilgrimage, and culture. By 1902, these historic cities had become connected by an extensive railway network that transformed movement and communication throughout the country. Originally issued in folding form for portability, this map survives as an authentic working document from the years immediately preceding the First World War. It preserves a view of rural and provincial France before the profound changes brought by twentieth-century modernization and conflict. Today, such maps appeal to collectors of railway history, military cartography, French regional history, and decorative antique maps alike. The framed illustrations used in our presentations are intended solely as display inspiration. This map is offered and sold unframed in its original antique condition. Condition Report: Good original condition, consistent with age and use. Original fold lines as issued. Light age toning and minor handling wear throughout. Small creases and occasional marginal imperfections associated with its intended use as a portable folding map. The printed image remains clear, attractive, and highly legible, with strong original coloration. Framing Suggestions: This map is sold unframed. For display, we recommend conservation mounting with all original margins and fold lines preserved as evidence of its historical use. A dark walnut, ebonized oak, or traditional French gilt frame pairs beautifully with the warm paper tones. An ivory or stone-colored museum mat provides an elegant presentation while allowing the intricate cartographic detail to remain the focal point. UV-protective museum glass is recommended. The piece works particularly well in libraries, studies, country houses, and interiors inspired by French travel and history. Technique: Color lithograph on paper, issued as a folding map.
