Created by the renowned French cartographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772), this detailed plan illustrates one of the most important French military and naval strongholds in North America during the colonial era. The map provides a carefully engraved plan of Louisbourg's harbor, fortifications, batteries, barracks, defensive positions, and surrounding coastline. A large compass rose dominates the center of the harbor, while an extensive key identifies the military installations and civic structures that made Louisbourg one of the most formidable fortresses in the French colonial empire. Bellin served as Hydrographer to the French Navy and was among the most influential cartographers of the eighteenth century. His maps are prized for their accuracy, clarity, and historical significance. This example is particularly interesting because it includes both the original French title and legend at the top and a German translation below, reflecting the international market for geographical publications during the period. Louisbourg occupied a strategic position controlling access to the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the maritime approaches to New France. The fortress became a focal point of conflict between France and Britain and played a significant role during the Seven Years' War. In 1758, following a major British siege, Louisbourg was captured and its military importance dramatically altered. Maps produced during this period provide an invaluable record of the settlement before its decline under British rule. The composition combines military, maritime, and cartographic interest in a highly decorative format. The bold fortifications, carefully engraved coastline, and elegant compass rose create an attractive visual balance while documenting one of the most important fortified settlements in colonial Canada. Today, this engraving appeals to collectors of Canadian history, Nova Scotia, French colonial America, military cartography, maritime history, and eighteenth-century maps. It is both a significant historical document and an attractive decorative map. This is an original eighteenth-century copper engraving, not a later reproduction. Sold unframed.
