A bentwood chair of French origin, crafted around 1890 in the tradition of industrially bentwood seating of the late 19th century. The curved struts and the spindle-patterned backrest create a clearly proportioned, formally serene overall effect. Historical Context: Bentwood furniture emerged in the 19th century as a result of an industrial manufacturing process in which wood was bent using steam. This technique allowed for the mass production of sturdy seating. Chairs of this type were widespread in cafés, restaurants, and inns around 1890, but also found their way into private homes. In France, they were part of the everyday furnishings of both restaurants and homes and shaped the image of bourgeois seating culture for decades.
Design: The chair follows the design language of late 19th-century bentwood furniture. Characteristic features include the curved lines, the vertically spindle-patterned backrest, and the curved struts in the lower frame. Construction and design are functionally driven, with ornamentation taking a back seat. The proportions are balanced, and the lines are calm and self-contained. Function: Formerly used as a robust, mass-produced seat, primarily in cafes, restaurants, pubs, and private homes. Today: usable as a dining or kitchen chair, a desk chair, or as a single side or accent chair.
Dimensions: Seat height 46 cm, overall height 86 cm, width 39 cm, depth 40 cm. Material and condition: The seat has been reupholstered in a shimmering blue fabric. The frame has been refurbished and is stable and secure. Signs of wear consistent with the age of the piece are present. The cabinet shown in the background is for decorative purposes.
