Traditional hand-carved West African architectural ornament or ceremonial fitting carved from a single piece of lightweight hardwood.
The sculpture features opposed zoomorphic heads with open jaws flanking a domed central element. A square mortise, approximately 2 inches across, passes completely through the carving, indicating it was originally mounted on a square post, beam, or architectural member rather than created as a freestanding sculpture.
Remnants of red and black pigments remain throughout the surface, highlighting the bold geometric carving and emphasizing the object's original ceremonial or architectural presence. Hand-tool marks and a rich, naturally aged patina are visible throughout.
This piece was collected in Côte d'Ivoire during a Harvard-affiliated art and architecture study tour by an artist/educator family member who focused on acquiring traditional works directly from local artisans and regional markets rather than decorative souvenirs. Other works acquired during the same journey included a large Senufo hornbill sculpture, a traditional ceremonial mask, and a carved West African granary door.
While the exact cultural attribution remains uncertain, the carving is believed to originate from the northern Côte d'Ivoire region or an adjacent West African cultural area and likely served as an architectural fitting or ceremonial post ornament.
A compelling sculptural object with exceptional presence despite its modest scale, equally appropriate for collectors of African art, ethnographic material, or sophisticated interiors.
