This is a fantastic Large Double-Sided Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Listed California Artist, Hendrik Grise (1914-1982). Grise was a prolific artist who was part of many of the major art movements of the mid-20th Century. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Dallas Museum School of Art before coming to Southern California in the late 1940s, where he consistently exhibited his work. He was friends with several artists from the New York School, including Mark Tobey who was close to Jackson Pollock. The influences of his time are clear in his bright, fluid works.
The front of the painting features an energetic all-over abstract composition exploding with vibrant blues, yellows, pinks, reds, blacks, and expressive splatter painting. Bold gestural brushwork radiates outward from a dynamic central focal point, creating a remarkable sense of movement and energy. The reverse reveals a completely different side of Grise's work—an expressive figurative study depicting a reclining nude accompanied by a winged cherub sounding a horn against a brilliant blue background. While looser in execution, the reverse is a compelling composition in its own right and offers a fascinating glimpse into Grise's creative process and recurring interest in surreal and symbolic imagery. Signed on primary side. Sold unframed. Will ship boxed to preserve integrity.
