Grise was … Read more This is a striking Large Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Listed California Artist, Hendrik Grise (1914-1982). Grise was a prolific artist who was part of many of the major art movements of the mid-20th Century. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Dallas Museum School of Art before coming to Southern California in the late 1940s, where he consistently exhibited his work. He was friends with several artists from the New York School, including Mark Tobey who was close to Jackson Pollock. The influences of his time are clear in his bright, fluid works.

Executed in Grise's signature Abstract Expressionist style, the work features sweeping black calligraphic forms layered over a vibrant field of brilliant blues, magentas, oranges, yellows, and expressive splattered paint. The bold looping gestures create a strong architectural framework while the energetic color beneath provides depth, rhythm, and movement. The composition is both visually powerful and remarkably balanced, making it an exceptional example of Grise's mature abstract work. Signed lower right. Sold unframed. Provenance and Certification: We bought the bulk of Hendrick Grise's estate in 2015 and are beginning to market his works and introduce him more broadly to the public.
