This is a fantastic Large Double-Sided Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by listed California artist Hendrik Grise (1914–1982). Grise was a prolific artist who participated in many of the major art movements of the mid-20th century. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Dallas Museum School of Art before relocating to Southern California in the late 1940s, where he exhibited consistently throughout his career. He was friends with several artists associated with the New York School, including Mark Tobey, who was himself closely connected to Jackson Pollock. The influences of his era are evident in Grise's energetic compositions, expressive brushwork, and fearless use of color.
Executed in 1981, this remarkable work is fully realized on both sides. One side presents an extraordinarily dense abstract composition alive with hundreds of gestural marks, vibrant calligraphic forms, and layers of brilliant blues, yellows, reds, and pinks. The reverse presents a striking surreal composition centered around a monumental eye, surrounded by expressive abstract forms and two intertwined nude figures rendered in Grise's unmistakable gestural style. Brilliant pinks, blues, oranges, and golds create a powerful sense of movement while calligraphic markings animate the surface. Like much of Grise's work, the imagery invites multiple interpretations, revealing new details with each viewing. Signed and dated by the artist. The painting may be displayed from either side according to the collector's preference. Sold unframed. Will ship flat and carefully boxed to preserve its integrity.
