Authentic early 19th-century blacksmith-forged wrought iron strap hinge with decorative hand-shaped leaf terminals. Measuring 18 inches in length, this substantial architectural hinge features a hand-wrapped hinge barrel, hot-punched nail holes, a gracefully tapered strap, and a forged circular eye at the tip. The irregular hammer-work and hand-forged construction reflect traditional blacksmith craftsmanship.
The hinge retains its original dark oxidized patina with honest surface wear consistent with age and use, making it equally suited for the restoration of a period home or as a sculptural piece of architectural history.
Purchased at a yard sale in Newport, Rhode Island, in the 1970s, this hinge has remained in my private collection for more than 50 years. While its original building is unknown, its long ownership history provides documented provenance extending back over half a century.
A striking example of early American architectural hardware with exceptional decorative appeal.
