A substantial and visually impressive example of French decorative sculpture, ideal for collectors of Moreau works, Grand Tour-inspired décor, and fine European antiques. The sculpture 19th-century French sculpture signed in the casting by L. & F. Moreau and depicts Bacchus (Dionysus), the classical god of wine, celebration, and abundance. Elegantly modeled with flowing drapery, grapevine adornments, and raised ceremonial vessels, the figure stands poised atop a naturalistic base adorned with grape clusters, a symbolic tribute to the deity's association with viticulture and revelry.
Executed in finely cast spelter with a rich bronze-tone patina, this impressive 28-inch sculpture captures the romantic sensibilities and superb craftsmanship associated with the renowned Moreau family of French sculptors. The figure rises from its original decorative socle base embellished with Rococo-inspired ornamentation, lending the piece a grand architectural presence suitable for a mantel, console, library, or curated collection of European decorative arts.
Finely cast with impressive detail, the figure features flowing drapery, expressive facial features, and a rich bronze-tone patina that highlights the sculptural modeling. He stands atop an ornate naturalistic base adorned with decorative classical motifs, enhancing the piece's Belle Époque character and decorative appeal. The graceful composition, dramatic movement, and mythological subject matter exemplify the enduring appeal of French Belle Époque sculpture. Equally at home in traditional, neoclassical, and eclectic interiors, this piece serves as both a conversation starter and a sophisticated decorative focal point.
The sculpture gives a clue to its provenance through the attached label on its underside dated March 17, 1997 which appears to document its acquisition by a previous owner. It reads: "L. F. (L & F) Moreau 1880 from Tom Locher (MSS) $375."
Perfect for you mantel capturing Bacchus, the Roman god of wine—in a moment of spirited celebration. With his head tilted back and an amphora raised triumphantly overhead, the sculpture conveys movement, joy, and classical elegance.
