There are objects that decorate a room. This one redefines it.
This large cast metal relief plaque works within one of the most recognized visual traditions in African art — the narrative bronze plaque form of Benin Kingdom, Nigeria. The iconographic language is authoritative and unmistakable: a hierarchical court composition on a stippled dot-field ground, warriors and courtiers rendered in high relief with extraordinary narrative density.
Displayed horizontally, the plaque resolves into a processional court frieze of remarkable clarity and movement. Reading left to right, figures move through the composition with ceremonial weight, layered across the stippled ground in the manner of Benin Kingdom narrative bronzes. At center, the crocodile anchors the composition in procession — in Benin court tradition, a direct symbol of royal authority, power, and the threshold between the human and spiritual worlds.
At distance, the plaque reads as a unified court scene of commanding visual weight. Up close it opens into individual detail — expressive faces, layered ceremonial garments, geometric body markings, leaf and foliage motifs filling the negative space, and hand-worked surface irregularities that no machine process replicates. The heavily mottled oxidation and mineral patina across the front are matched by the raw, organically textured reverse — the kind of aged casting character that reproduction pieces rarely bother to replicate on the back.
At over 50 lbs and 36 inches across, this is not a print or a casting of convenience. It has physical gravity to match its visual authority.
