Hardcover. 8 vols.; volume 1 only 1896, rich olive green leather, covers and spines lettered and decorated in intaglio gilt font and embellishing bands. Each volume with frontis; full page plates with tissue guards printed in red including titles, and lengthy quotations and descriptions. Hundreds of ilustrations including photogravures, etchings, wood engravings and typogravures. A marvelous showcase of the artists and book Illustrators of the day including: Madeleine Lemaire, Gerard, Emile Teschenforff, Gustave Doré, Sir Everett Millais, Howard Pyle, Frederick Barnard, E. A. Abbey, P. Guérin, William Morris, Sir Edwin Landseer, Jean-Louis Gerome, Jean Francois Millet, and many others. Age appropriate occasional rubbing along spine and edges, and light foxing.here and there. The rest of the set generally very fine with only occasional light to moderate rubbing mostly to some bottom edges.

The edges of the pages maintain a vibrant shimmering gold gilding.The subject matter is compelling and the illustrations are simply beyond the modern world. Beyond their substantive value, they are just a striking, elegant antique touch as a matter of decor.
