This standing figure belongs to the Hampatong tradition of the Dayak peoples of Borneo (Kalimantan), Indonesia. Hampatong is the term used for ancestor and protective figures made of hardwood, which the Dayak of Borneo positioned at burial sites as memorial sculptures or in front of longhouses as guardians. The figure presents the classic formal elements of this tradition: arms held at the sides, upright stance, cylindrical head, and inset white turbo sea snail shell discs as eyes, a hallmark of Ot
Danum Dayak figures from southern Borneo. The body is covered with dense incised geometric line work filled with natural pigment, diamond lattice patterns on the torso,
chevron and stepped motifs on the arms and lower body, and branch-form designs on the face. This type of full-body incised decoration represents tattooing or scarification markings, a significant element of Dayak spiritual and warrior identity. The wood is dense, heavy hardwood, blackened through age and handling.
Condition: Good, solid construction, incised detail intact throughout, shell eyes present and secure
