A remarkable mid century modern walnut credenza by Widdicomb, with grain patterns so figured it almost resembles rosewood.
The case sits atop a pair of recessed plinth-style legs, giving the piece a grounded architectural stance while making the cabinet appear to float slightly above the floor. Their black lacquer finish allows the legs to recede into the shadow below, enhancing the piece’s subtle floating effect.
This particular piece was built in 1957, the first year after T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings' thirteen year tenure at the Widdicomb Company ended. Whether or not this design was in production prior to his departure is uncertain, as we have been unable to locate any others exactly like it. Regardless, it bears his distinct influence.
Expertly restored with few signs of prior use despite being produced seven decades ago. The drawers slide smoothly and the hinged door functions perfectly.
