The Flatiron Building rises through a silvery veil of spring rain in this atmospheric oil by Richard Schwarz, signed and dated 1995. Schwarz works squarely in the American Impressionist street-scene tradition — the lineage of Guy Wiggins and Childe Hassam — and here he trades the usual winter snow for a wet, luminous morning: pavement slick with reflected green light, a horse-drawn flower cart heaped with pink blooms, top-hatted figures under umbrellas, trolleys and wagons receding into the mist toward Madison Square.
