A large Chinese export hardwood scholar's brush pot or vessel crafted in a beautifully restrained and minimal cylindrical form. The pot is crafted from a dense red-brown rosewood, and features a thick rounded rim, hollowed interior, and gently polished exterior surface. The wood displays a rich and variegated patina, showing tones of deep mahogany and amber with dramatic natural figuring throughout the surface. The hand-finished and rounded lip of the piece is thick and tactile. Scholar's brush pots were traditionally used to hold calligraphy brushes and writing implements. The piece today is well suited for use as a minimalist desk object, decorative vessel for flowers or brushes, or an organic accent piece. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
