Dr Thomas Monro (1759–1833) ran the informal 'Monro' academy, where the young J.M.W. Turner and Thomas Girtin found patronage, along with other members including John Linnell, John Sell Cotman, Peter de Wint, William Henry Hunt, Joshua Cristall and John Varley.Provenance: Alexander Monro and by descent.In graphite heightened with white (oxidised) and black chalk.
