Carved from a single monumental olivewood root, this remarkable work transforms the natural contours of the wood into an intricate architectural landscape of winding stairways, towers, terraces, dwellings, bridges, and defensive walls, creating a composition that invites exploration from every angle.

According to the original Hamedian Gallery bill of sale, the sculpture was described as approximately 80 years old at the time of purchase, suggesting a creation date of circa 1910–1915. The work is attributed to Karol of Bat Yam, Israel, whose remarkable vision allows the organic burl, grain, and natural movement of the olivewood to become an integral part of the composition itself. Rather than carving against the wood, the artist embraces its natural form, allowing the architecture to emerge organically from the root as though it has grown naturally from the hillside itself.

Unlike the smaller devotional carvings and souvenir pieces traditionally associated with Holy Land olivewood, this is a fully three-dimensional sculpture with no true front or back. A brass presentation plaque affixed to the polished hardwood plinth identifies the olivewood as originating from Jerusalem's Kidron Valley, one of the region's most historically and biblically significant landscapes. The plaque further states that the olivewood root was approximately 2,000 years old. While this age should be regarded as part of the piece's documented provenance rather than independently verified fact, it remains an important element of the sculpture's original presentation and history.
