The scene belongs to one of the most beloved traditions in European genre painting: the contented, wine-loving monk made famous by the 19th-century Munich painter Eduard von Grützner, whose cellar-master scenes hung in taverns and gentlemen's dens for generations. This is a warmly executed homage to that lineage, signed lower left "R. Schwarz" and dated 1991 — a later hand carrying a much older mood.
