Grise was a … Read more This is a stunning Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Listed California Artist, Hendrik Grise (1914-1982). Grise was a prolific artist who was part of many of the major art movements of the mid-20th Century. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Dallas Museum School of Art before coming to Southern California in the late 1940s, where he consistently exhibited his work. He was friends with several artists from the New York School, including Mark Tobey who was close to Jackson Pollock. The influences of his time are clear in his bright, fluid works.

This dynamic composition features sweeping gestural forms and layered abstract imagery in vivid reds, blues, yellows, blacks, and whites against an airy light blue background. The balanced composition and energetic mark-making are characteristic of Grise's mature style and create a striking sense of movement and depth. It is signed in the lower right, dated 1970s (last digit is cut off by paint) and is sold unframed as shown. Will ship boxed to preserve integrity.

Provenance and Certification: We bought the bulk of Hendrick Grise's estate in 2015 and are beginning to market his works and introduce him more broadly to the public. The majority of the works in our collection have never been offered for sale. We have some of the BEST works by Grise that you will ever find. Each piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Condition: Good vintage condition overall. There is visible age-related cracking within the black painted area in the upper left portion of the composition. The cracking appears stable, and the painting otherwise presents well with strong color and visual impact. Please review photographs carefully.
