Elegant pistache green painted french provincial marriage armoire, early 19th century.
there are pieces of furniture that simply store things. And then there are pieces that store stories. This exceptional french louis xv style marriage armoire, dating to circa 1840, belongs firmly to the second category.
originally created as a “normandie armoire du mariage”, it was traditionally gifted to newlywed couples as a symbol of union, prosperity, and a shared future. Not just furniture, but a promise carved in oak.
above the doors, two delicately carved lovebirds face one another in quiet conversation, framed by flowing foliage. An emblem of devotion and partnership. On the two doors floral baskets and abundant botanical carvings unfold like a perpetual spring celebration, symbols of fertility, growth, and domestic harmony. In rural french tradition, nothing is accidental here: every leaf and feather carries intention.
the cabinet has been refinished in a soft pistache green; fresh, gentle, and unexpectedly modern in its calmness. It softens the grandeur. Inside, four shelves offer practical storage, balancing poetry with everyday life.
flexible interior - the armoire is currently fitted with adjustable shelves but can easily be converted into a wardrobe. If you prefer hanging space, we can customise the interior with a hanging rail and a single top shelf before delivery.
this configuration is ideal for dresses, shirts, blouses, jackets and other everyday garments. The interior depth is generous, although, as is common with many early 19th century french armoires, it is slightly shallower than a modern wardrobe. Bulky winter coats can certainly be hung inside, but wider hangers may sit at a slight angle rather than perfectly straight.
constructed from sturdy and solid french oak, this armoire is as enduring as the ritual it once represented. It has been carefully restored, treated for longevity, and remains in great working condition, with age-related traces that speak quietly of its long life rather than diminishing it.
a marriage armoire like this does not merely stand in a room. It settles in, like a memory that chooses to stay visible.
for transport this armoire will be taken apart and will consist of the top, sides, back parts, doors, bottom and shelves, all flat pack.
