From my late mother's collection is this charming painting of a young girl by New Hope and Nantucket artist, Mary Sarg Murphy. This piece was purchased directly from the artist on Nnantucket in the 1960s or 1970s. I have reframed the work in a high quality Larsen Juhl frame which I think is more complimentary than the original wider frame. It is shown in the last two photos. I can replace the work back in the original wider frame if desired. The work is on canvas which measures 8 x 10" Reframed dimensions are 12 x 14 and original frame dimensions are 15.5 x 17.5.
Mary Sarg Murphy was born in London in 1911. She studied portraiture there and was educated at the Sorbonne in Paris. She studied at the Art Students League in NYC from 1930-1933. She further trained at the Phoenix Art Institute and the New York School of Applied Design for Women in NYC.
She was a painter, illustrator, and decorative artist greatly influenced by her fun loving father Tony Sarg, who was a decorative artist, illustrator, and puppeteer. He is perhaps best known as the original designer of the Macy's Day Parade in NYC.
Mary began her art career decorating boxes and furniture in her father's shops in New Hope and Nantucket, where the Sarg family spent their summers from 1923 on. She later designed fabrics, wallpapers, children's clothing and towels for the shops. She also became an accomplished portrait painter. She lived in New Hope until 1958, moving permanently to Sarasota FL and Nantucket in 1960 with her husbnd John. She died in Sarasota in 1986.
