Grise was a … Read more This is a stunning Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Listed California Artist, Hendrik Grise (1914-1982). Grise was a prolific artist who was part of many of the major art movements of the mid-20th Century. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Dallas Museum School of Art before coming to Southern California in the late 1940s, where he consistently exhibited his work. He was friends with several artists from the New York School, including Mark Tobey who was close to Jackson Pollock. The influences of his time are clear in his bright, fluid works.

The is a very strong example of his work. The eyes in the background are haunting and keep the viewer engaged. Brilliant pinks, cobalt blues, reds, yellows, and deep earth tones combine with gestural brushwork and spontaneous mark-making to create a dramatic composition that balances recognizable imagery with abstract expression.

Provenance and Certification: We bought the bulk of Hendrick Grise's estate in 2015 and are beginning to market his works and introduce him more broadly to the public. The majority of the works in our collection have never been offered for sale. We have some of the BEST works by Grise that you will ever find. Each piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Condition: Excellent vintage condition. No tears, creases, or paint loss. Some minor signs of handling.
