The sideboard dates from around 1870 and stylistically represents the transition from the Louis-Philippe period to the early Gründerzeit (late 19th-century German industrial boom). Its structure is clearly organized; the mirror-image veneered walnut surfaces and the curved crowning finial appear balanced and calmly proportioned. Historical context: Sideboards with open upper sections were a standard feature in 19th-century middle-class dining and living kitchens. The lower section with drawers and doors served to store dishes, cutlery, and provisions, while the open shelves of the upper section were used to display plates, bowls, and serving dishes. The Louis-Philippe design language, with its veneered walnut and restrained articulation, met the growing demand of the rising middle class for solid, prestigious, and practical furnishings, which were increasingly produced in workshops. Design: This piece follows the Louis Philippe style with its calm lines, rounded edges, and large, mirrored walnut veneer. Ornamentation is concentrated on the carved crowning element and the profiled frames, allowing the veneer's surface effect to take center stage. The curved top and the faceted block feet echo the movement of the crowning element and formally complete the composition. Function: Originally used for storing and displaying dishes and porcelain in the dining and kitchen areas, this sideboard is now suitable for the dining or living room, offering storage in drawers and the main body, as well as display and presentation space on the open shelves. Dimensions: Height: 185 cm × Width: 148 cm × Depth: 60 cm. Material and Condition: Walnut veneer, softwood interior. Preserved in keeping with its age, with a subtle patina and visible signs of wear that contribute to its historical character. Professionally inspected and prepared at Kastellan, cleaned and treated appropriately for the material, structurally checked and stable and functionally safe.
