The balloon-shaped backrest with its openwork, sheaf-of-ear design in the center appears clearly structured and calmly proportioned, supported by fluted, tapered legs. Historical context: the rounded, closed-top backrest – known as a balloon or montgolfière backrest, its form reminiscent of contemporary ballooning in the 1780s – is a standard design element of the louis xvi style. Cane chairs were lighter than upholstered seating and were used in salons, dining rooms, and living rooms where flexible, easily rearranged furniture was desired. This particular example follows the tradition of french cherrywood (merisier) furniture, which continued into the 20th century and faithfully reproduces classical designs. Design: the design follows the principles of louis xvi: straight, fluted, and tapered legs, symmetrical construction, and geometrically structured ornamentation with rosette motifs. The oval, closed backrest and the vertically structured central panel create an upright, formally cohesive silhouette. Function: formerly used as parlor and dining room seating. Today, it can be used as dining room or side chairs, individually or as a set. Dimensions: height 95 cm × width 47 cm × depth 43 cm, seat height 45 cm. Material and condition: solid cherry wood (merisier), seats with viennese cane webbing. Stable, age-appropriate condition with minor signs of wear; one front leg is visibly slightly crooked, without affecting stability or function.
