The basket is woven of thin round bamboo strips that are secured with black fiber, adding color contrast, as well as stability and durability to a light, ethereal looking piece. The base and the middle of the basket have additional structural elements, used for securing the fine woven fibers. Suruga bamboo basketry is a traditional Japanese craft with a legacy spanning over 400 years, originating from the vicinity of Shizuoka City in Shizuoka Prefecture. Recognized as a national traditional craft in 1976, it was born out of a court aristocrats' need for elegant baskets, including bait containers used in falconry and bird and insect cages. It is characterized by the use of large numbers of fine bamboo strips, as indicated by the name Sensuji (meaning one thousand lines). Craftsmen go through many processes to ensure the strength and flexibility of bamboo strips, making them very durable and long-lasting. Obvious hand-made qualities and natural color palette add Organic Modern influence to the basket, making it a great addition to a shelf or table decor in various styles of interiors, from Traditional to Contemporary, Modern Country, Collected, Transitional, Coastal, or Modernist. It can be used as a decor piece, as dry flowers display, or as an ikebana basket.
