An impressive marble bust by the English sculptor William Behnes (1795-1864), who was Sculptor in Ordinary to Queen Victoria (1837). A brilliant and talented artist, his works can been seen in Trafalgar Square and St. Paul's Cathedral in London, as well as in museums, libraries and private collections. This marble bust of an unknown gentleman (some research suggests this may be a likeness of William IV, Queen Victoria's paternal uncle), portrays a man a nobility and dignity in classical dress gazing into the distance with expressive eyes and mouth as well as excellently rendered ears, which are particularly difficult to realize. The rounded pedestal base is part of the sculpture. On the reverse side of this pedestal the work is signed, "Behnes, LONDON 1842"
Please note that this marble bust is very heavy and requires at least two people to move. The dimensions are: 23" wide x 33" high x 13" deep. This is offered as the sculpture only; the walnut pedestal shown in the photos is a separate item.
This sculpture was purchased in England in 2004 during a buying trip and was used in displays in our high-end interior design furniture showroom. It was never sold. Considering its age, the piece is in excellent condition with no chips or gouges and no parts missing. The marble itself, however, does have some discoloration, spots and specks-- all of which are consistent with age and all of which are apparent in the attached photos. Notwithstanding, this is a marble bust of great presence and will make a wonderful addition to any room or garden.
