Along … Read more A bespoke tiger maple mirror in the chippendale style by Armand LaMontagne for R. LaMontagne and Sons, dated 1986. Along with Emmet Eldred, Bill Wheeler and Douglas Dimes, he was one of the most accomplished makers of the Colonial Revival movement in the 1960s. LaMontagne remains legendary in the antiques world for having built a replica 17th century Brewster chair that ended up in the collection of the Henry Ford Museum. In a New York Times story that garnered national attention, LaMontagne explained that because unscrupulous dealers had begun to pass off his work as antique, he felt obliged to leave clues to their modern construction that true experts should easily recognize. When museum curators were not convinced that his peg holes had been drilled with a modern threaded bit rather than period spoon bit, he advised they might wish to x-ray their new purchase to find the embedded copper penny from the year he created it.
