This is a fantastic Large Double-Sided Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Listed California Artist, Hendrik Grise (1914-1982). Grise was a prolific artist who was part of many of the major art movements of the mid-20th Century. He studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the Dallas Museum School of Art before coming to Southern California in the late 1940s, where he consistently exhibited his work. He was friends with several artists from the New York School, including Mark Tobey who was close to Jackson Pollock. The influences of his time are clear in his bright, fluid works.
One side features bold black gestural forms layered over an energetic field of blue, yellow, red, and white splatter painting. The reverse presents a fully realized abstract composition with intertwined calligraphic forms in vivid blues, greens, reds, and pinks. Executed on paper and signed lower right. Both sides are painted, allowing the work to be displayed according to the collector's preference. It is not dated but looks to have been done around 1970. Sold unframed. Will ship boxed to preserve integrity.
Provenance and Certification: We bought the bulk of Hendrick Grise's estate in 2015 and are beginning to market his works and introduce him more broadly to the public. The majority of the works in our collection have never been offered for sale. We have some of the BEST works by Grise that you will ever find. Each piece comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Condition: Good vintage condition overall. Scattered areas of paint loss and surface wear consistent with age and handling. Several small areas of paint chipping are present, including one larger area near the center. The condition issues do not significantly detract from the visual impact of the work and are difficult to notice within the highly gestural abstract composition. Please review photographs carefully.
Measurements: Painting is approx 40"x26"
