A refined console/hanging magazine rack by Eugenia Alberti Reggio and Rinaldo Scaioli, dating back to the late 1950s/early 1960s. Its sinuous, continuous line is remarkable, made possible by the masterful use of bentwood, a cutting-edge technique in post-war Italian interior design.
The console table extends horizontally, integrating three distinct functions into a single asymmetrical block:
- the magazine rack (left side): The wood bends downward, creating a vertical U-shaped pocket, ideal for holding magazines and newspapers;
- the main shelf (center): The line rises to form a flat horizontal surface, designed as a pocket emptier or a place for small decorative objects.
- the lowered shelf (right side): A second bayonet curve lowers the level of the top, terminating in an elegant raised edge that serves as a lateral stop.
The frame features no visible cuts or joints, showcasing the natural grain of the rosewood, which harmoniously follows the curves of the piece. It is wall-mounted via cylindrical brass brackets visible at the upper joints. These elements slightly distance the wood from the wall, creating a visual "floating" effect and protecting the surface behind it.
This piece fully embodies the design philosophy of Eugenia Alberti Reggio and Rinaldo Scaioli, oriented towards the fusion of sculptural aesthetics and rigorous domestic functionality. This console table embodies the organic elegance of Italian Midcentury Modern.
