A striking example of Leonardo Nierman’s (1932-2023) iconic La Flama (“The Flame”) sculpture, expertly hand-carved from beautifully veined marble in soft shades of blush, gray, cream, and rust. The sculpture’s elegant, flowing form evokes both a rising flame and a musical treble clef, embodying the sense of movement and energy that defines Nierman’s work.
Born in Mexico City in 1932, Leonardo Nierman is internationally celebrated for his dynamic abstract paintings and sculptures, many inspired by music, motion, and the forces of nature. His works are held in prominent public and private collections worldwide and have been exhibited extensively throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The La Flama form remains one of his most recognizable sculptural designs and has been produced in a variety of stone types, including marble and onyx.
This example is unsigned, which is not uncommon for Nierman’s stone sculptures. Numerous authenticated examples of La Flama are known to exist without signatures, with attribution based on the distinctive form, carving style, and material characteristics associated with the artist’s work.
A particularly desirable feature of this sculpture is its rotating base, allowing the piece to be turned and displayed from multiple angles. As the sculpture rotates, its silhouette continually changes, revealing new lines, curves, and areas of dramatic stone veining. This interactive quality enhances the sense of movement for which Nierman’s work is celebrated.
At 10.5 inches tall, this sculpture offers impressive visual presence while remaining versatile enough for display on a bookshelf, console, desk, or small pedestal. The richly figured marble and fluid organic silhouette make it equally at home in Mid-Century Modern, Contemporary, Organic Modern, and Modernist interiors.
A sophisticated and highly decorative work associated with one of Mexico’s most celebrated modern artists.
