A compelling 19th-century French School interpretation of Marius at Minturnae, after the celebrated neoclassical composition by Jean-Germain Drouais. The scene depicts one of the most dramatic episodes recorded by Plutarch in his Life of Marius: the exiled Roman general Gaius Marius, imprisoned at Minturnae, confronting the assassin sent to execute him. Overcome by Marius's commanding presence and force of character, the would-be executioner recoils in fear and abandons his mission.

Rendered in the neoclassical tradition, the composition relies on powerful gesture, theatrical lighting, and psychological tension rather than physical action.
