Add a powerful layer of history and character to your interior architecture with this exceptional 19th-century dome top steamer trunk. Masterfully built by the historic maker E.J. Jones of New York, this piece proudly displays its original, engraved brass maker’s plate on the front trim. Photographed in an elegant home entryway, the trunk's exterior features a commanding combination of warm, rich pine planking framed by heavily embossed black iron hardware, heavy-duty iron structural straps, and intact cast-iron corner guards.
Purchased in 18th-century antique country style from Enfield, Connecticut in 1990, this trunk has been expertly cleaned, sealed, and transformed from its original raw state. The massive interior, accessed past the original textured leather lid-stay straps, has been immaculately upholstered in a charming, traditional red-and-green calico micro-dotted cotton fabric. For design professionals, this piece serves as an unforgettable, functional focal point—ideal as a statement coffee table, a bedroom blanket chest, or a historic anchor piece at the foot of a bed.
This is a much loved piece enjoyed by my family for years, but in downsizing the family home, we don’t have room for it. This piece of furniture has always been kept in a climate-controlled (and dehumidified), smoke-free home.
Condition Note
The trunk is in very good antique condition. The wood is structurally rock-solid with no rot or soft spots, and the ironwork has been beautifully preserved. The custom fabric lining is entirely pristine, free of tears, stains, or odors. Naturally, it displays beautiful, authentic historic patina, including minor age-appropriate cracking to the decorative leather lid stays that only enhances its 19th-century story.
