A rare 3x5 French tapestry dating to circa 1950–1960, after Jean-Claude Bissery’s The Woodman. Manufactured by Robert Four in a limited edition of 100 examples, this signed piece reflects the successful translation of modern French art into the medium of tapestry.
On the Design
This exceptional French tapestry reproduces The Woodman (Le Bucheron) by Jean-Claude Bissery, the French artist born in 1930 whose expressive compositions merge modern painting with decorative textile traditions. The scene portrays a solitary woodcutter moving through a densely animated forest, his figure enveloped by brilliantly colored foliage and abstracted trees. Against a dramatic black ground, luminous reds, oranges, blues, yellows, and whites create an almost stained-glass effect, transforming the woodland setting into a highly theatrical composition.
Bissery’s design balances figuration and abstraction, allowing the trees, leaves, and landscape to dissolve into rhythmic passages of color and line. The work demonstrates the influence of mid-century French modernism while retaining the narrative qualities associated with traditional tapestry design. Produced by the renowned Robert Four manufacture and bearing the ERF mark, this example belongs to a limited edition of only 100 copies, making it both an artistic statement and a significant collectible textile. Its vivid palette, painterly energy, and documented authorship distinguish it from conventional decorative tapestries of the period.
