:
a fully sculpted figure of the biblical hero david, crafted from light-coloured alabaster. It depicts the youthful victor over goliath in a relaxed contrapposto pose, with his head turned slightly to one side. The sling strap, characteristic of depictions of david, runs over his left shoulder, whilst his right hand is clenched into a fist. Behind his left leg stands a tree stump serving as a supporting element, which both stabilises the composition and visually connects the figure to the rock-like plinth.
the sculptor paid particular attention to the meticulous rendering of the curls, the finely modelled facial features and the anatomically balanced representation of the body.
the slightly translucent quality of the alabaster lends the surface a lively sense of depth and causes the material to shimmer warmly depending on the angle of the light.
personally, i find it particularly skilful how the sculptor links the turn of the head with the movement of the body. As a result, the figure appears lifelike despite its calm posture and takes on a different effect from almost every angle.
interesting facts:
the depiction of david has been one of the most popular subjects in european sculpture since the renaissance. Numerous artists created their own variations on the old testament hero, who was seen as a symbol of courage, virtue and the triumph of the spirit over physical might. Particularly in the late 19th century, smaller-scale sculptures based on famous models enjoyed great popularity and were used to adorn salons, libraries and gentlemen’s studies.
the alabaster used was a favoured material for decorative sculptures due to its fine texture and marble-like appearance. Centres of alabaster craftsmanship were located, amongst other places, in italy – particularly in the area around volterra – as well as in france and england.
condition:
good condition for its age, with minor signs of wear, isolated chips and an age-related patina. The plinth has a chip on the reverse.
