After receiving private painting lessons in his hometown of Cologne in 1911/1912, Erdle studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1912 to 1918, interrupted by military service in the First World War. His most important teachers there were Willy Spatz, Carl Ederer, and Adolf Maennchen. Afterwards, he worked as a freelance painter. In 1919, he was one of the founding members of the artists' association Das Junge Rheinland (Young Rhineland), from which he broke away along with other artists who united in the Rheingruppe (Rhine Group). During the 1920s, Erdle traveled through Germany, Belgium, France, and Spain. In 1924, his son Anno was born, who also became a painter. In 1928, Erdle co-founded the Rhenish Secession. He also joined the Deutscher Künstlerbund (German Artists' Association). Erdle belonged to the circle around Johanna Ey and was friends with Otto Dix, Max Ernst, and Gert Wollheim. In 1929, the city of Nuremberg awarded him the Albrecht Dürer Prize. In 1937, during the "Degenerate Art" campaign, 15 of his works were confiscated from public collections. Seven of these were destroyed. The whereabouts of the others are unknown. Nevertheless, he was able to participate in a number of exhibitions. In 1943, his house and studio were destroyed in air raids on Düsseldorf. After that, he lived in Robertville (now in East Belgium) until 1945, where the painter Peter Janssen also retreated. After the Second World War, he re-established himself in Düsseldorf. During this time, he exhibited his work at Hella Nebelung's gallery as early as December 22, 1945. In 1948, the city of Düsseldorf honored him with the Cornelius Prize. This piece has an attribution mark,
