This item is a 1995 work titled The Protector by Rick Herold, executed as a bold abstract figural composition with strong mask-like forms, saturated color, and graphic black linear patterning. The construction appears consistent with Herold’s known interest in reverse painting on plastic or vinyl, where pigment is applied to the reverse side of a transparent or semi-transparent support and then mounted to a wooden stretcher or backing.
The visual language combines modernist abstraction, spiritual symbolism, and protective or ritual imagery, which fits the title and the artist’s broader use of erotic, spiritual, and symbolic themes. The inscription on the reverse gives the title, artist name, and date.
