Vintage W.H. Gunlocke Chair Company mid-century modern desk chair with arms in a burnt orange naugahyde, tweed seat, heavy duty swivel-tilt mechanism, 4-leg wood base with casters. This unique American-made Gunlocke chair retains two original paper manufacturer labels and a metal token from Wayland, New York and the company's Whittier, California facility. It features a solid hardwood frame (possibly walnut) and, indicative of Gunlocke craftsmanship, it has attractive, curved wood pieces that supports the back.
The chair swivels and rolls and the backrest tilts through a large, exposed metal coil tension assembly. Both the seat and the backrest can be adjusted. The mechanism is a fascinating piece of old-school engineering and a reminder of an era when office furniture was built to last.
This chair shows its age consistent with decades of use. There are imperfections of wear in the wood finish and scratches, most particularly on the wood base legs. The naugahyde has a few scratches and some small wear patches. The metal has a rough patina and small patches of rusting. It is not a pristine collector piece—but could make a rewarding addition for someone who appreciates mid-century design and craftsmanship.
The dimensions were measured when the seat height was in about its middle position and the backrest in its lowest position. Thus, the chair seat could be either raised or lowered a bit and the backrest could be raised a bit. The legs and casters underneath are 29.5" across each axis.

Some small scratches and patches of wear in the naugahyde on the backrest and fading of the color on the arms. The tweed seat fabric shows some age, but there are no tears. The cushioning in the seat has compacted over time. The metal mechanism has developed a rough patina and some patches of surface rusting. less
