This is an exceptional antique lamp, hand carved of soapstone, richly textured in a rose, tan and cream tint. The carvings are an intricate floral design with peonies and a phoenix bird. It's more than a lamp, it's a piece of history. This piece would be perfect on a nightstand, desk, entry or end table. The lamp is in working order with a two side-by-side bulb sockets with pull chains.
The oldest identifiable soapstone sculptures date back more than 3,000 years. The oldest identified soapstone crafts where made by artisans in China. Experts believe that artwork made of soapstone has survived throughout the centuries because humidity does not cause the stones to break down. The Ming Dynasty, which lasted from 1368 to 1644, saw the height of soapstone production in China. Soapstone became the standard as jade prices rose, making it too expensive for many artists.
Beautifully carved on this lamp is the ultimate pairing: When the phoenix (king of birds) and peony (king of flowers) are carved together, they represent the peak of "prosperity and righteousness". This combination is a popular motif for wishing a couple a happy, prosperous marriage or celebrating family success
