artist leonardo roda (racconigi, cuneo, 1868 – turin, 1933) a piedmontese landscape painter, largely self-taught, he honed his skills under the guidance of marco calderini. A passionate mountaineer and botanist, he spent extended periods in valtournanche in the aosta valley, where the matterhorn became his favorite subject, depicted in countless versions as the seasons, times of day, and weather conditions changed. He made his debut at the promotrice torinese exhibition in 1889, in which he participated for the next thirty-five years; he was also a member of the circolo degli artisti in turin from 1895 to 1925, and exhibited at shows in florence, milan, and genoa. His style, which falls within the verismo movement, is distinguished by a textured and vibrant brushstroke and a modern sensibility in the use of color.
