Italy, first half of the twentieth century origin italy period first half of the twentieth century author cesare bentivoglio (genoa, 1868 – genoa, 1952) a self-taught painter, he trained through his association with antonio varni and giuseppe sacheri in genoa. His favorite subjects were seascapes, port views, hunting scenes and mountain landscapes, with particular attention to the dolomites. For undocumented reasons, he systematically refused to participate in the promotrici genovesi and, in general, in any public art exhibition. His works, however, reached a large private market, appreciated by the genoese bourgeoisie and, through foreign merchants, also in france and england. From an initial adherence to the tradition of ligurian landscape painters, close to the so-called grey school, he moved through the influence of the macchiaioli to arrive at a vibrant and personal use of color, in the wake of post-impressionism.
