The saint is represented standing, holding a missionary staff and a cross, symbols closely associated with his evangelizing mission. The sculpture retains an expressive facial model, richly decorated garments with extensive gilt and estofado decoration, and a strong devotional presence characteristic of Colonial Latin American religious art. Particularly noteworthy are the elaborate floral and scrolling motifs decorating the cloak and robes, executed in gilded estofado over polychromy, as well as the impressive scale of the figure. The metal halo and certain devotional accessories are later additions, consistent with the historical use and veneration of such images. An important and highly decorative example of Colonial religious sculpture, equally suited to a serious collection of Spanish Colonial art or as a striking statement piece in a refined interior.
