Exquisite oil on canvas, signed by Manuel Ramos Artal, depicting a garden scene with a stone staircase. It is characterized by his masterful command of plein air painting, precisely capturing the interplay of light and shadow on the stone steps and foliage. The frame is a period carved and gilded wooden frame.
Impressionism, which originated in France in the last third of the 19th century, was an artistic movement defined essentially through painting. It was characterized primarily by its ultimate aspiration: to capture the light of a specific moment in its works, employing a loose, impasto, and very rapid brushstroke.
Thanks to technical and scientific advances that allowed for the creation of new pigments, the use of pure colors also became widespread. These achieved a purity and saturation of color previously unimaginable. Complementary colors also became fundamental, along with the type of brushstroke and the complete absence of drawing. For this same reason, shadows, which had previously included black in their composition, came to be called "colored shadows," mixing complementary colors to darken them without the need for black. This also helped to create a greater sense of depth. This work perfectly exemplifies all the characteristics of the style.
Manuel Ramos Artal (Madrid, 1855-1915)
Spanish painter specializing in landscapes. He studied at the Special School of Painting, Sculpture, and Engraving in Madrid, where he was a student of Carlos de Haes. He later traveled to Italy, France, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Belgium to further his training. He regularly submitted his works to competitions and exhibitions and won a third-place medal at the 1884 National Fine Arts Exhibition for his painting titled "Landscape near the Cristo de la Vega (Toledo)," and a certificate for a third-place medal in the 1887 edition. He was awarded a medal of merit at the exhibition organized in Madrid by the Association of Writers and Artists in 1880. He also participated in exhibitions organized by the Madrid gilder Herráiz and the newspapers El Globo and El Porvenir.
