We are pleased to present this stunning 19th-century oil on canvas. This magnificent, large painting features a signature at the lower right: watson w. Below this is a date that is not entirely legible, possibly 1896 (?). It is referable to the painter william watson junior (1847–1921). The english watson family is made up of three generations of artists influenced by rosa bonheur, a french animalist and realist painter, and sir edwin landseer, an english painter and sculptor known for his animal paintings. This painting is indeed a beautiful academic copy inspired by rosa bonheur's 1860 painting "the highland raid."
a stunning painting that celebrates the majesty of a herd of cattle. At the center of the scene is a herd of typical scottish highland cattle, characterized by long horns and thick coats. A majestic bull with a golden/light coat advances to the right, while next to him stands a dark and black bull facing forward, creating a strong color contrast. On the left, a flock of numerous sheep and goats with light, thick fleeces move closely alongside the main herd. In the background, shepherds with typical staffs for guiding the animals can be seen. The surrounding landscape evokes scottish moors and hills, beneath a partly cloudy blue sky on the right.
animal painting was extremely popular in the 19th century. This painting reflects pure 19th-century realism, with meticulous attention to anatomical details and the texture of the animals' fur and wool. The artistic quality is excellent, with visible, soft, and textural brushstrokes that capture the many nuances of color.

the painting is accompanied by a magnificent 20th-century gilded wooden frame with relief decorations that perfectly complements the work.
