He also worked as an antiques dealer and a stock broker. Here is a brief biography courtesy of Marge Piper;

Harry Townsend had a studio in Centerville, Indiana, six miles from Richmond. He painted around the Whitewater River Valley with George H Baker for about 40 years and was well known in local circles. He was born in Muncie and lived in Richmond most of his life. He studied with John Elwood Bundy at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the Boothbay Art School in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He was visiting instructor at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1925. Submitted June 2004 by Marge Piper. Source: "Art in Richmond 1898-1978"

Townsends' use of underpaint and scrapped glazes gives this particular painting an unusual depth and realism and is surly a nod to techniques he learned studying artists of Cape Cod and the Boston area North Shore. See less
