A remarkable and highly decorative Japanese tansu chest dating to the late Meiji period, circa 1880–1905, crafted from richly figured keyaki (Japanese zelkova) and adorned with extensive hand-forged iron hardware throughout.
This exceptional chest showcases the artistry and craftsmanship for which Meiji-era Japanese furniture is celebrated. The facade is anchored by a dramatic hand-worked iron dragon stretching across the upper drawer, while a powerful shishi (guardian lion) adorns the lower drawer, symbols traditionally associated with protection, strength, prosperity, and good fortune.
The warm amber-brown keyaki wood exhibits extraordinary grain movement and cathedral figuring across the drawer fronts, creating a striking contrast against the deep black forged iron mounts, corner brackets, hinges, escutcheons, and drawer pulls. The asymmetrical drawer configuration, hidden compartment door, and elaborate lock plates reflect the practical ingenuity and artistic sophistication of traditional Japanese cabinetry.
Originally designed for the secure storage of valuables, documents, textiles, and household treasures, this chest possesses the timeless versatility sought after by today's collectors and designers. Its substantial presence makes it equally suited as a statement console, sideboard, entry chest, media cabinet, or focal point within a curated interior.
The back retains its traditional plank construction, while the chest still includes its original group of working keys—a highly desirable feature rarely found with surviving examples.
Rich in character, age, and craftsmanship, this is a museum-worthy decorative object that effortlessly bridges Japanese history with contemporary interiors.
