Often, these types of swords were repurposed from European trade blades or hand-forged locally by regional blacksmiths, these particular swords appear to be the latter.

The most defining feature of these swords is the highly detailed leatherwork. It showcases geometric, multi-colored braided leather patterns (often arranged in chevrons), large circular leather medallions, long braided shoulder straps, and distinct hanging leather tassels. The hilts feature a signature metal knuckle-bow guards and faceted pommels, heavily influenced by French or European military sabers imported into West Africa during the colonial era. The slightly curved saber style blades are made of iron and show significant rusting, but the blades are intact and sturdy. Overall, these swords are fine examples of West African artisanship and would make fine display pieces.
