19th Century Oil Portrait of Elting Family Member by C. L. Lewin – Ulster County, New York
Antique 19th Century Oval Oil on Canvas Portrait depicting a member of the distinguished Elting family of Ulster County, New York, painted by the portraitist C. L. Lewin. Presented in an original period oval frame and housed in a substantial period panel frame.
The Elting family were among the earliest Dutch settlers of the Hudson Valley and played a significant role in the peaceful settlement of the New Paltz region. Family patriarch Jan Elting was one of the original patentees associated with the 1677 agreement between the Paltz Huguenot settlers and local Native Americans, a landmark transaction that helped establish one of the earliest successful and peaceful colonial settlements in New York.
This portrait offers both artistic and historical appeal, representing a family deeply connected to the founding and development of Ulster County. The sitter is depicted in formal attire characteristic of the period and rendered with fine attention to facial features and expression. The work bears the hand of C. L. Lewin, a noted nineteenth-century portrait painter whose works are represented in numerous private and institutional collections.
