An appealing original oil on board painting by noted New Hampshire artist and master frame maker Albert Duvall Quigley, depicting a farmer leading his cows home across open fields in a tranquil rural landscape. The scene beautifully captures the quiet character of New Hampshire farm life, rendered with Quigley's sensitive use of color, atmosphere, and light.
The painting is signed by the artist and measures 7¾ inches high by 12 inches wide. It is presented in an impressive period frame measuring 18½ inches wide by 13½ inches high by 2½ inches deep, believed to be one of Quigley's own handcrafted creations.
Beyond his accomplishments as a painter, Quigley was highly regarded for the frames he designed and built for his works. As noted in his biography, "Many of Quig's frames were hand-carved, some painted or gold-leafed and they were often tinted to in some way match or complement the painting. They were thought to be the very finest frames available at that time." The substantial frame accompanying this painting exhibits the quality and harmonious presentation for which Quigley's frames became renowned.
The combination of a signed pastoral landscape and a probable original artist-made frame makes this a particularly desirable example of Quigley's work. Collectors value not only his evocative depictions of New England life but also the rare survival of his handcrafted frames, which are considered works of art in their own right.
Quigley kept no list of his paintings and made no record of their sales and thus their whereabouts are pretty much unknown. The family has retained a few. There were but a few left in his house when he died. He sold or traded most of his paintings as he finished them.
A wonderful opportunity to acquire a signed work by one of New Hampshire's notable painter-craftsmen, complete with what is likely its original handcrafted frame, enhancing both its historical significance and display appeal.
