This small but impactful original oil painting by artist John Gaitha Browning (1912–1992) features a simple portrait of a Navajo woman. It reflects Browning's love of the Southwest. His paintings often feature New Mexico’s glowing adobe villages, violet foothills, and dramatic desert light.
When Browning enlisted in the Army in 1942 at age twenty-nine, he set out to document the experience in a journal, capturing everything from the routines of boot camp to the realities of combat. It resulted in his book, "An Artist At War." As the Dallas Morning News observed, he had a remarkable ability to find beauty and humanity even amid the hardships of the Pacific theater during World War II.
Known for his evocative paintings of the American Southwest, Browning brought the same keen eye and thoughtful perspective to his wartime writings. As the Dallas Morning News observed, he had a remarkable ability to find beauty and humanity even amid the hardships of the Pacific theater during World War II.
Born in Mississippi and raised in Texas, Browning studied art in New York. After the war, he spent many years in Arizona and New Mexico, including nearly two decades working among the Navajo and Zuni peoples, experiences that greatly influenced his art.
A lifelong educator and active member of the Texas art community, Browning exhibited widely, painted murals, and taught art throughout his career. He was honored as Brownwood Artist of the Year in 1983.
