Stella builds this lakeside terrace from the ground up in gold leaf, then works back into the gilded surface with oil in passages of soft blue and ochre, allowing the metal to remain visible at the edges of every form like light striking water from below. The architecture and figures along the terrace are rendered with a deliberate looseness, more impression than record, so that the eye is drawn first to the way the gold catches and releases light as the viewing angle shifts. It is a quiet, atmospheric composition, closer in spirit to a remembered afternoon than to a topographical view.
Given a wall with consistent natural light, a dining room, sunroom, or window facing sitting room, the gold ground will read differently throughout the day, which is part of the appeal of acquiring a work from this series. Lakeside and coastal subjects represent some of the most collected imagery in Stella's late catalogue, and this canvas is a well balanced, mid scale example of that body of work.
Andrea Stella (1950–2019, Italy), born in Italy in 1950 to Greek parents, was a painter of rare vision whose work fused history, myth, and abstraction. Trained at the Florence Studio of Artistic Woodworking, he began his career restoring medieval treasures in Tuscan churches before evolving into an artist who transformed painting into a luminous exploration of light and material.
Inspired by the Tuscan countryside, the Casentino forests, and the cultural legacy of Florence, Stella rejected rigid definitions of image and meaning. His abstract expressionist canvases and mixed-media works explored myth, light, and materiality. In his later years, he pioneered a meticulous process of fusing 24-carat gold and copper onto canvas, oxidizing the surfaces into brilliant successions of orange, green, red, and gold - works that shimmer with both physical presence and spiritual depth.
Stella was honored by the Municipality of Florence at the Prize of All Arts ceremony, where he was the guest of honor and featured in a solo exhibition, La Corte dei Sognanti (The Court of the Dreamers), at the Palazzo Vecchio. His work is permanently installed in the Palazzo Pitti Museum in Florence and the Vatican Museums in Rome, and has been exhibited across Europe and the United States, including Miami, New York, and California.
Collected by private and corporate patrons, Stella’s paintings merge historical richness with striking innovation. His legacy endures in luminous, transcendent works that testify to art’s power to reveal and heal.
